Lesson 563: Kingdom

Hello, Readers.

It just seems like minutes ago we were posting this:

Now we are shouting,
Hello, Snow!
The Kingdom is once again white.

Erie got an early blast last weekend,
that's still sticking around.
It's one of the earliest snows that stuck
As far back as I can remember.

Hazel was afraid of the snow at first,
but she got used it it fairly fast.
Sorry, Hazel.
You have no choice.

Buddy the Elf sure was happy!

The snow coming before all the leaves had fallen
made for some interesting scenery.

The dog loves all the new boots to chew on.

She's improving her behavior
at Puppy Boot Camp.

Lucy was voted Miss Congeniality.

Sister Opal is kind of a suck up.

Hazel felt under dressed, I guess.

But she caught onto lay down after a few tries.
Hazel will be Queen of the Doggie Kingdom in no time.

Speaking of Kingdoms--
Did you know that the Land of Oz is divided into four quadrants?

One of the most interesting things I came across in our novel study
is the original map of Oz had a compass rose that was reversed.

The Munchkins were ruled by the Wicked Witch of the East--
the one Dorothy flattened with the house.
See?
In this map it is located in the West.
And the Wicked Witch of the West
with her creepy flying monkeys--
she lived in Winkie Country
which appears in the east on this map.

Intentional or not?
A publishing mistake?
Was this a mirror image world
as Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass?
Or perhaps a parallel universe
like Stranger Things and the Upside Down.

One of the other interesting parts of the book
that didn't transfer into the well known movie,
is that in the end,
each of Dorothy's traveling companions
ruled kingdoms.

The Scarecrow became the Ruler of Oz.
The Tin Woodman became the Ruler of the Winkies,
who the Wicked Witch of the West oppressed.
The Lion became the Ruler of the Forest of the East.

And Dorothy?
She discovered she had what she was looking for all along--
the power to return to her true kingdom--
the Kansas prairie she called home.

There are a few interesting theories
if you would like some weekend reading--
just a bonus this weekend,
no assigned homework--
since the Thanksgiving holiday is right around the corner.

Even though winter does not begin until December 21st,
the fall seems to have ended with the snow.
