Lesson 816: Oh, Honey!

Fall is really a beautiful season in Pennsylvania.

Oh, honey, is it ever!

Especially near the lake!

I always picture Mother Nature flying over the land,

tapping plants and trees with her wand.

Here's an interesting comparison of the Clark School tree,

from 2022 to 2023 at nearly the same time.

and

We went through the seed chapter Thursday

in my Master Gardner class.

I still don't know what to do with these things.

That's probably because I got a 20% on the pretest.

I read the chapter,

went through the webinar,

then retook the test.

I got a 50%.

It is hard!

But I enjoy it.

I have a lot to learn about the plants I love!

This is what a Master Gardner webinar looks like.

It's not exactly a wild night out.

To liven up Thursdays,

I've been working on this needle point while I listen.

I love the honey colored petals on this sunflower.

It was sunny out midweek

and I made my gang stay outside as long as possible.

Especially the patient.

Slam #51 has been as cockeyed as his sign.

I was fooled into thinking his mono was mild.

I learned this week that mono has three phases,

and he spent most of this week in the acute phase on the couch.

Oh, the mono throat!

Oh, my poor honey!

I tried to get Sam to take a honey concoction I made
since antibiotics don't work for mono.

You would have thought I was killing him.
The gagging.
The complaining.
The loud, thick-throated protests.

Oh, honey, my @$$!
He's STUBBORN.
Some things never change.

One guy who watches for sameness and for change is this guy:
The Angry Bee Keeper.

I love this guy.
Erieites,
he's from the Niagara Region of Canada,
so not too far from us.
He's getting lots of attention lately
because of his weather predictions about
this upcoming winter.

Who is the Angry Bee Keeper?
This is how he describes himself in his Tik Tok bio.
My name is Lee Moore. I'm a beekeeper certified by the wind and the rain. I reside in southern Ontario Canada with my wife, daughters and cousins by the dozens.

If you are interested in his comparisons of this fall,
to the fall of 2016,
which El Nino was in play--
check out how his bees behaved:

Here's another one about the golden rod flow

I like this gal from Texas, too.
Here is a Today Show clip of her life with the bees.
She's best known for scooping them with her bare hands!
Erika Thompson
With an audience of over 10 million bee lovers online, Erika Thompson is the most popular beekeeper in the world. Her revolutionary bee removal work showing how to humanely handle bees has been featured on The Joe Rogan Experience, CNN, the BBC, on The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Ellen Show and more.

I love it when things in life connect!
Look what book I happen to be listening to.

What a good book.
It has some heavy topics
and it comes with trigger warnings about domestic violence,
but the story that builds is so good.
It's told through a series of present day
and flashbacks.
Just like LOST
and why I loved the show so much!

This connection happened as well, this week.

I think I'm going to escape into this story tonight.
It's been a hard few days.
We lost a kitty in a hit and run Thursday night
and we are all very sad at the Lamp Post.
Someone else's story is the only thing
that can remove me from my own for awhile.

Good night, Readers.
Sleep tight---
and add a little honey to your Sleepy time tea!

Lesson 815: Fall Colors

Fall is just brilliant in Lamp Post country.

We caught a Saturday at the cabin last week

and were able to enjoy it's full color burst

from Erie

to Marienville.

The pond at the Community Park got a revamp.
I'm really going to miss the tree,
but I also really like this fish.

The camp will be getting a makeover very soon, too.

You'll have to wait to see what we have in store
for visitors!

I caught these golfers at Harbor Ridge
as I was going into work at Clark School,

making this one of my favorite captures this week!
It also makes me envious of retirement.

We got to see our friend Dallas play hockey this weekend.

We also stopped at a great place to eat
on the way home from the cabin last Saturday--
Wicked Warren brewery in Warren, PA.
We highly recommend going this month
and choosing a bite to eat
from their Octoberfest menu.

#51,
the Lamp Post's favorite lineman,
took an unexpected turn this week.

He has Mono
and will most likely be out for the rest of the season.
Heal well
and
heal fast, Sam!

When my family is sick,
it's hard for me to take on any large projects,
although just living my life
feels like a large project most days.
To get my mind off of things,
I step into my stories.

I read many books at one time,
picking up the one I feel the most in the mood for.

This week I only listened to this book,
which I rank as remarkable.
This was her debut novel, too!
Great writing
and a really different story.
Eloise gives this one 5 stars.

As for my eyeball workout,
I'm still on Stephen King's 11/22/63.
The fact that I haven'r read anything else
besides my Master Gardner Manual,
should tell you something.
Wow!
What a story.

To prove that you can find beauty
in an otherwise thorny life,

check out this guy!
Friendy Wendy found him doing his job on a flower.

She even got a video of him,
fully pollen drunk!
You'll hear our excited chatter in the background.

The drunk bee

Have a great weekend!

Lesson 814: Area Code

 Hello, Readers!

What's it like in your Area Code?

The Lamp Post is in one of Pennsylvania's original area codes.

It's the largest one!

I didn't put time into my research this week,

but from the bit I heard,

we are getting a new area code.

I found some info with 2020 dates and a plan,

also some with 2022 dates that it would begin.

Help Eloise out if you know for sure.

The more I read,

the more I was confused.

It will mess up my gift buying

if we move to 582.

I love this clothing line from Erie Apparel.

In my search I found what a few sources claimed were

the most popular area codes.

Let's take a quiz!

Eloise loves quizzes!

See if you know what they are--answers at the bottom of this blog:

Washington DC:  __________

Los Angeles:  ____________

New York City:  ___________

When I read the information about New York City's,

an online source, Ringblaze stated

that theirs was the most requested area code,

but it was nearly impossible to get it because it was exhausted.

So, that raised two questions in Eloise's old brain:

1.  What deems an area code exhausted?

2. What does nearly impossible mean?

Think some more.

Read some more.

Check your answers below.

After an unseasonably warm week

with temps in the 80's

made the roses feel like it was early July

instead of early October.

It was so warm

we had watermelon for dessert one night this week.

Still,

it is fall--

such a beautiful time of the year.

The leaves are falling

and are extra brown and crunchy this week.

The leaves are reaching their peak of color change,

and the grapes are almost to the perfect amount of sweetness.

Penny's favorite thing

is to ride through the neighborhood vineyards
to the farm stand!

Natalie's been finishing every puzzle in the area code!
She made 4 this week!

Sam passed his Driver's License Test!

We haven't seen much of the Study Bug
out in Edinboro.
I'm looking forward to Thanksgiving
so I can see her
(and Gus).

What has Eloise been up to?
Learning how to use the saws out in the barn.

I'm working on this,
but it is much harder than it looks.

and I want to make this!
Isn't is just perfect?

Here are the answers to your quiz!

Washington DC--202
Los Angles--310
New York City--212

Have a great weekend,
Eloise
